Patrick McNeil of Design MeltDown just launched Shop @ Design MeltDown to support his upcoming book, The Web Designers Idea Book.

Don’t start what you can’t finish

This blog has sat here, untouched, for a few months now and I figured it was time for a post. Here’s a great tip… “Don’t assign yourself more than you can handle without loosing your mind”. This blog has quietly sat in it’s unfinished state for a reason, I don’t have the time right now. It’s very easy, in this industry, to get burned out and uninspired. Focusing your creative energy on the client projects (the ones that pay the bills) should take priority over anything else, after all… they are paying for your unique skills. If and when there’s some creative brain cells and enthusiasm left after that… have at it! Just don’t try to do so much that one day you wake up and say to yourself “I don’t want to do this”. A career in the creative industry should be a fun path to follow, after all… we’re not pushing numbers, saving lives or keeping the peace. It’s subjective and the area between right and wrong is totally grey. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of times it’s no cake walk. Creative block, impossible clients with even more impossible deadlines, all nighters, etc. But the good times should outweigh the stressful times. In summation: don’t burn yourself out, stay inspired and enjoy the career path you’ve chosen… design is fun! After all, people think we just play with crayons all day… maybe we should?

The development of attractive/interesting content continues and there are one or two css bugs to be worked out for IE, but this site is just about ready to officially launch. I’ve got a stock pile of tutorials/tips started and new topics on design are cropping up every day. Stay tuned as my first content dump is right around the corner!

A small bump in the road, (again)

EDITED: Ok, after my short stint in St. Louis over the easter holiday, it’s now officially time to finish designing & laying the groundwork for this blog. Stay uned this week fior the final updates/additions & hacks.
ORIGINAL POST: If you’ve been following the progress of this re-deign at all, then you’ve noticed that not much has happened in the past week. We’ve been absolutley slammed at the office (which excluding the lack of time I have for this site, is a good thing). Tons going on for Targetscope, but by the end of the week I’ll be back on finishing this thing up. So close. A few more page templates and some hacking to the CSS to get it right on IE and Safari and it’ll be ready to fill with the good stuff, CONTENT!

Testing new permalink structure (updated)

UPDATE: Looks like it’s fixed. I had to edit the .htaccess file to re-direct accordingly. So now all the article links make sense as a readable URL.

Ok, I edited my permalink structure and it broke all my links. I’d really like to implement the date hierarchal “year/mo/da/name” and the “category/name”structure over the current, and non-sensical, “casedsgn.com/?p=8″. I know it’s longer, but it just seems much more useable and human. Especially when bookmarking. I smell another Wordpress tutorial (provided I actually figure this out).

Category and Single Post Pages Built

I’ve spent the morning figuring out how Wordpress handles Category and Single Post views. It’s much easier than I thought to get categories to display using specific templates. However, displaying a single post within in a certain category template was a little less obvious, and I had to do some digging. This topic will make for a good Wordpress tutorial as soon as I get the site structure complete. Until then, at least when you click through to an article the text doesn’t run off the screen.

A filler tip for testing

Here’s a tip… for myself. Dude! Go read a PHP book. There’s a lot this CMS offers, but so much more if you knew how to code custom functions and such. Get busy. Learn the goods. Stop typing this dumb ass tip and go make yourself useful.

A tip off the old block

Well, for my first tip… throw internet explorer in the recycle bin (pc) or trash can (mac). One of the most frustrating things in the world is to break a perfectly valid css/xhtml layout to work in IE. Requiring more hacks than a chopping block, ie has got to be the biggest pain in the ass for any web designer developer today. Switch to Firefox, switch to Mozilla, switch to Opera, switch to Safari, switch to pretty much ANYTHING. Now… to convince the remaining 90% of web users.
